On the 26th of June, the unique limestone mountain range (the Dolomites) in northern Italy was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of the most beautiful landscapes. With this act, the United Nations have distinguished and verified the distinctive and unique features of this gorgeous mountain range. Most of the approximately 142.000 hectares (548 square miles) natural preserve is located in South Tyrol. Six of the new mountain ranges are also located in South Tyrol. The nature parks Sextner Dolomiten, Fanes-Sennes-Prags, Puez-Geisler, as well as Schlern-Rosengarten with the affiliated Latemar and Bleterbachschlucht are close by.
